"This growing family of five needed more space, and they found a beautiful—yet dated—mid-century colonial home in the suburbs of New Jersey," interior designer Andrea Britt Pietragallo says.
Meet the Expert
Andrea Britt Pietragallo, interior designer and owner of Britt Design Studio based in the New York City area, combines modern and fresh with traditional design to create inviting and timeless interiors.
"The wife works as a forensic accountant, investigating some of the nation's most high-profile financial fraud cases, and has to travel a lot for her job," shares Pietragallo. "Before we started this project, she stressed to us that she wanted to come home from her trips to a primary bedroom that evoked a sense of peace and calm."
Primary Bedroom
The term "Primary Bedroom" is now widely used to describe the largest bedroom in the home, as it better reflects the space's purpose. Many realtors, architects, interior designers, and the Real Estate Standards Association have recognized the potentially discriminatory connotations in the term "Master." Before:
"The space felt flat and dark with its brown textured wallpaper, dated armoire, too small rug, and a dimly lit lantern that looked like it belonged on the exterior of the house," Pietragallo notes.
After:
"We wanted the room to feel like a beachy escape, something that exuded a soft and airy feel," Pietragallo says. "To achieve this, we incorporated pale blue and white as main colors and added architectural interest to the walls and ceiling using white wood trim. The homeowners now come home to a place where they can rest and recharge, surrounded by beautiful things."
What Changed:
- Color scheme: A blue and white color palette conjures up a sense of cool and calm.
- Bed: The studded trim adds a bit of modern design to the king-sized linen blend headboard.
- Bedding: Blue and white print pillows pop against the white duvet and its blue trim.
- Walls: White trim, including a custom medallion, were added to the blue-gray walls to create interest and draw attention to the vaulted ceiling.
- End tables: The oversized bedside tables have a faux Belgian linen finish, gold pulls, open-air shelving, and two drawers for storage.
- Dresser: The 9-drawer curved serpentine dresser is covered in grasscloth, adding texture to the room.
- Lamps: Matching crystal table lamps, with their simple natural paper shades, create a soft glow.
- Pendant: An opal glass and hemp beaded ceiling fixture gives off a beachy vibe while becoming the room's statement feature.
- Rug: A blue and white woven cotton rug, with its herringbone pattern, pops against the dark hardwood floor.
- Benches: The two squared benches at the foot of the bed are covered in a small-scale animal print.
- Mirror: The cloud-shaped mirror, with its graceful scalloping and horn inlaid frame, allows for a more feminine moment.
- Accessories: The anatomy of a well-styled nightstand: lighting, a box for storing reading glasses, small scale artwork, and fresh flowers.
